Why Music Therapy?

Holistic Emotional Processing

As informed by psychodynamic and humanistic theories, we aim to help you explore and express deep emotions and self-concept through music. This approach can facilitate a comprehensive understanding of your inner world and personal growth.

Creative Self-Discovery

Our music therapy approach uses music to help support awareness of your past and present experiences, as well as unconscious patterns. This can lead to profound self-discovery and insight into how past experiences impact your current behavior and relationships.

Authentic Connection

Our music therapy approach supports a safe and unique space for authentic self-expression and meaningful connection. The therapeutic relationship fosters trust and empathy, enabling you to express your true self and build deeper interpersonal connections.

Increased Engagement

Using a range of therapeutic techniques can make the therapy process more engaging and dynamic. Clients may find that integrating different methods keeps sessions interesting and relevant, which can enhance motivation and commitment to the therapeutic process.

Personal Growth and Connection

We're here to support you as we enact stories, ideas, feelings, and symbols. Integrative music therapy fosters deep self-discovery by using experiential and insight-oriented methods to reveal unconscious patterns and their impact on current behavior. It also creates a space for genuine self-expression and meaningful connections, while promoting creative problem-solving and transformation through dynamic musical engagement.

Personalized Treatment

By drawing on multiple therapeutic modalities, integrative therapy can be tailored to fit the unique needs and preferences of each individual. This flexibility allows therapists to address a wider range of issues and adapt their approach as therapy progresses.

Non-Verbal Processing

If expression is challenging for you, we're hear to help you find your way. Music therapy represents an opportunity for meaningful non-verbal emotional exploration and expression. Music therapy allows you to explore and express emotions through musical activities, which can be particularly beneficial if you find verbal communication challenging or if you seek a more creative and experiential approach to therapy.

Meet Dan

"As an integrative music therapist, I focus on emotional or psychological concerns. My approach is informed primarily by psychodynamic and humanistic principles. I often use improvised music techniques with my clients, as well as composition, songwriting or production, song discussion or lyric analysis, and song recreation.

To me, music is never about 'good or bad' but an opportunity to connect deeply with the self and others."

Our Philosophy

Music is essential to human growth and development.

Before one's ability to reflect on the passage of time, we exist in the disorganized chaos of infancy. The self-awareness we typically expect of others is contingent on the ability to internalize a sense of time, present and past.

As we find our ability to express, we learn that certain tones, rhythms, and patterns help us to meet our needs, long before we utter or understand words.

As we grow older, music continues to teach us about ourselves and the world around us, while serving us in countless ways. In today's world, it's easy to lose touch with the music within us and to seek it elsewhere. We're here to ask the question: what can your music do for you?

  • We're fostering transformative music-centered relationships.

    Our clients' stories

  • I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity to be part of the music therapy program. Through my weekly sessions, I have slowly been able to rebuild my sense of self and purpose while navigating a mental breakdown. I only wish more people could have this opportunity.

  • The Pen Bay Music Therapy program is unique and so valuable. While I have struggled to find consistent mental health care with providers in the medical setting, my music therapy sessions have provided me great care and encouragement weekly.

  • My son Jeremy first began seeing Dan in June of 2018.

My son had many challenges. He struggled with low self-esteem, lacked socialization skills, lacked motivation/interest in anything but self-stimulatory movements and he was often considered non-verbal. Dan began sessions once a week and initially Jeremy would only engage in short spurts needing many breaks. After just a few sessions, Jeremy became excited to see “Dan the music man” (that was our nickname for him) and not only did he become interested and engaged for the entire session, he began playing the instruments and singing along to the fun songs. They even wrote a song together!

  • I appreciate the opportunity to try other instruments in a completely nonjudgemental setting as well. It gets me out of myself.

  • Working with Dan was a special experience. At that time, I felt fragmented. Dan helped me relate and connect with myself. We navigated trauma and previous experiences that had created blocks within myself. He is forthcoming in his thought process, supportive, and non-judgemental.
